Katharine and Michael

How they met: The couple met at the Elks Tower building, where they both worked.

How they got engaged: Michael proposed while the couple was vacationing in Ecuador, at the actual equator. “We were standing on different hemispheres,” says Katharine.

Details, please: During the ceremony, Michael’s 15-year-old son, Connor, played guitar and his 24-year-old daughter, Danielle, sang Colbie Caillat’s “Realize.” Katharine’s “something blue” held special significance: It was a blue anklet made by her 13-year-old sister, Kristine. Her “something old” was a handkerchief provided to her by her grandmother.

Fun stuff: A candy bar featured custom monogrammed and dated M&M’s and brownies with the couple’s faces. An ice bar, made with the couple’s initials carved in ice, served as a bar. “It took eight guys to carry it down,” Michael says of the 2,000-pound behemoth. Paying homage to Michael’s love of golf, each guest received a white chocolate-covered champagne truffle golf ball in a gold box.

Memorable moments: “I was most emotional when I said the vows,” says Katharine. Michael’s 6-year-old niece, Jordan, recited—not read—a verse from First Corinthians.

Green theme: The couple walked from the Capitol to the Elks building under a green umbrella, which matched Katharine’s green Manolo Blahniks and tied in to Michael’s nickname for her, Grasshopper. Guests were given little pewter grasshopper pins that included the couple’s names, wedding date and the phrase “Life of a Grasshopper: The next chapter begins.”
