How they met: Both air traffic controllers, the couple met while serving in the Air Force.
How they got engaged: While Sharon was working, Michael got a pilot to take him up in a plane and proposed to her over the airwaves. “I said, ‘I’m having a hard time maintaining my altitude because I’ve fallen madly in love with you,’” Michael recalls. “‘The only way to maintain my altitude is if I have your hand in marriage.’” Sharon’s response? “Affirmative.”
Vow wows: The couple had fun writing their own vows, incorporating lines from Star Wars and Team America. Michael even managed to belt out a few lines from Boyz II Men. During the blessing of the rings, references were drawn from Lord of the Rings. “A lot of people were laughing, which is what we wanted,” says Sharon. “We wanted to make sure everyone had fun and we wanted to have fun as well—and we did,” says Michael.
Top that: A Princess Leia doll dressed as a bounty hunter and a Donald Duck doll dressed as Han Solo served as cake toppers. “I wanted everything to be non-weddingish,” says Sharon.
Photo ops: Michael wore a pinstriped tux and fedora and, in honor of their Halloween wedding, carried a “really good replica” of a Tommy gun when the couple took pictures in Old Sacramento. Sharon donned a traditional gown but changed into a 1920s-style flapper dress for their first dance, the fox trot, followed by a swing number. The bridal party wore flapper-style attire, and guests were encouraged to come in costume.
