Jacqueline and José frequented the same nightspots and got to know each other briefly when they were 21, and then went separate ways. Throughout the next 10 years, each got married, had children and got divorced. So when they saw each other at Crawdad’s, it took them a minute to remember how they knew each other.
“I didn’t recognize her at first,” José says. “She used the oldest line in the book! She said, ‘Don’t I know you from somewhere?’” The two quickly placed the familiarity, and haven’t been apart since.
They dated for a little less than a year before José proposed.
“I was at work and he conspired against me,” Jacqueline says humorously. “He called and said he ran out of gas, and he needed my ATM card. So I rushed out of my building, and he’s standing there staring at me. He spins me around and my co-workers were on the second floor holding a sign that said, ‘Will you marry me?’”
Both were elated to get married, but José’s involvement was impressive. “I was told more than once that I was the bridezilla,” he says.
The ceremony and the reception were both held at Arden Hills Country Club. José says one of the funniest things that happened was, “I danced for her and she would not let me take off the garter unless she approved of my dancing techniques.”
He also performed with his father and his uncle and the mariachis, and sang to Jacqueline.
“It was the best wedding I’ve ever been to or I’ll ever go to,” José says.
