Big, Beautiful Hair for Your Big Day

As the big day approaches, brides frantically handle the last minute details for their wedding. In particular, the vision of how they hope to look in their gown starts to become a reality. Everything must be perfect: the gown, the shoes, the veil, the right makeup (or makeup artist), and especially the hair. Brides have so many options these days when it comes to hairstyles. However, if your hair is on the shorter or finer side, you may be limited. That is, until now.

Ladies, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. You know all of those celebrities and models in magazines, movies or television with long beautiful hair you are so envious of? They all have extensions. I admit I have always been curious and have wanted long and thick hair, so I tried them out.

I saw my hair stylist, Liz Novak of Sacred Heart Salon, a small boutique salon on 21st and X streets, for a consultation. She has extensions of her own, and her hair is gorgeous and looks totally natural. During a consultation, she matches your hair color and discusses the length you would like (they range from 18-22 inches). I opted for the longest extensions.

It took about two weeks for my micro-link extensions to be ordered. They were made of 100 percent human hair and were incredibly soft. The whole process took less than two hours. They were attached to my real hair and secured with rings that sealed with silicon, and then clamped down onto the hair. Liz then highlighted, trimmed and styled my hair as usual.

Since there is no glue or sewing involved, they do little to no damage to your existing hair, and you can go back in and have them removed whenever you like.

Right away I was shocked at how long my hair was and how naturally the extensions blended with my own hair. It took a while to get used to the extra weight on my head, and sleeping was a bit uncomfortable at first, but now I do not even feel like they are there. The hair can last anywhere from eight months to an entire year. Every six weeks when I go in to get my highlights touched up, Novak will simply move the micro-link extensions higher up on my hair shaft so that they are closer to my scalp.

So, if you have a wedding or special occasion coming up, or if you’re like me and want to try it just because, do some research, because many salons around Sacramento offer the service. I will admit, it is a bit of an investment, starting at $600 and up for hair and installation, but I love the results and would do it all over again in a heartbeat. If you’ve always dreamed of having long, flowing hair on your wedding day, this is a great option to consider.
